At Family Fund extra we understand it is not always easy to find the right information, support and services to meet the needs of a family that care for a disabled child.

To give that little bit of extra direction, we have listed some of the organisations that, through their own work and services, help disabled children and their families enjoy ordinary life.

  • As as organisation we support in the region of 21,000 clients a year through a variety of services face to face or over the telephone. Currently, we run 30 Actionnaires clubs across the country that are sports clubs for visually impaired children aged 8-16, 4 specialist hotels, a mobile information service that covers the UK. Action has 12 teams across the country that provides support on a wide variety of strands including Welfare Rights, Assistive Technology, Housing and Employment.

  • Contact a family provides advice, information and support to families with disabled children across the UK. It runs a national freephone helpline, organises events and workshops and produces a medical directory with information on over 1,000 long-term and rare medical conditions. Parents can telephone their freephone helpline on 0808 808 3555 Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm and Monday 5.30pm - 7.30pm.
  • Direct Gov, public services all in one place for parents of disabled children.
  • The Family Holiday Association work to promote the quality of family life for those parents and children who experience disadvantage as a result of poverty through the provision of and by promoting access to holidays and other recreational activities. In 2008 they expect to help over 1,600 families enjoy a break as a result of their grant-making.

  • The Children’s Trust provides care, education and therapy to children with multiple disabilities and complex health needs. Our services are available to children from across the UK and range from special education for children with profound and multiple learning disabilities to short breaks, transitional, palliative and long term care. We also run the UK’s largest rehabilitation centre for children who have an acquired brain injury.

  • We are a Membership Society that provides parents with a lifeline. Members receive a regular newsletter with developments in the biomedical and therapeutic world, a lending library of autism-specific resources, special offers with essential suppliers and discounts on conferences. We run Local Groups across the United Kingdom where often-isolated parents can meet to discuss treatment, get support - or just let off steam.
